"Helpful Hints" in regard to financing:
If the above costs involved seem too expensive for your community organization, here is an interesting method of financing such an event.
Rather than approach a wealthy member of the community about sponsoring the entire evening, speak to about 5 or 6 (or more) wealthy individuals and see if they would be willing to “underwrite” such an evening. In exchange you would honor them and/or their parents on the title page of your evening's program. This means that you would charge a nominal fee at the door ($5 or $10 per person) but if you happen to come up with a 'short-fall' (not cover your expenses with the monies you take in at the door), then these individuals would “divide” that short-fall amount between them and cover your expenses.
For example, let's say that you contacted 5 agreeable wealthy individuals to cover your short-fall and your expenses for an evening lecture would (hypothetically) be:
1. Rental of a hall
$500
2. Publicity
$450
3. Security
$200
4. Refreshments
$ 80
5. Speaker's fee
$950
Total
$2,180
Now, let's say that you charge $5/person at the door, and you bring in 350 people; that's $1,750. That's a short-fall of $430, of which each of the 5 individuals in question has only to pay $86. {Obviously, you may be thinking, in such a scenario why not just charge $10/person and have a net gain of $1,320! Well, you have to know your community and how much they can pay.}
